Effective Communication with Direct Reports
Mon Jan. 25th 2016

If you have direct reports you have a responsibility to communicate effectively with them.
Even if you talk informally on a regular basis, diarise a one on one at least monthly. Go for a coffee or shut the door and turn your phone off. This is their time and you need to give them your undivided attention. We have a very simple format that works wonders. Simply talk about what worked well the previous review period (month/fortnight/week), what can be improved and agree on what the employee is going to focus on for next period. Discuss any support they require and identify who can provide that support. Use the talent you have within your team or company wherever possible. Your staff member receives a copy of the one on one form and you retain a copy which is used as a starting point for the next meeting.
"Effective communication requires more than an exchange of information. When done right, communication fosters understanding, strengthens relationships, improves teamwork and builds trust." Liz Papadopoulos
Regular one on one, honest communication will help you achieve this outcome with your team.
